Latest on MJ’s Death
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
“Dr. Conrad Murray, the person who was with Michael Jackson when he died, never told investigators until recently that he found Michael Jackson at 11.00 am not breathing. He also never said that he waited a mere ten minutes before leaving to make several phone calls. In fact, Dr. Murray never said that he left Michael Jackson’s room to make phone calls at all.”
A designation of homicide means that Jackson died at the hands of another, but does not necessarily mean a crime was committed.
Chernoff, Murray’s lawyer, said: “Much of what was in the search warrant affidavit is factual. However, unfortunately, much is police theory”. Chernoff did not deny Murray had given Michael Valium, Lorazepam, Midazolam and Propofol on the morning MJ died.
Murray also told detectives he was not the first doctor to give Michael Propofol, but claims the singer refused to tell him which other physicians were treating him and what drugs they were prescribing.Police are currently investigating Murray, as well as Dr. Arnold Klein, Dr. Allan Metzger and Dr. David Adams, all of whom have links to the late singer.

Kick-Ass Packaging of the Week: Vonnegut Dollhouse
Filed Under CD Packaging, DVD Packaging | 1 Comment
I know this album was out two years ago but I just cannot not include it on my Kick-Ass Packaging list! I am a sucker for miniatures so you must have an idea how much I drooled over this very inventive Vonnegut Dollhouse CD packaging by Jeff Harrison of Rethink Communications.
He actually built scale models of a house and photographed each panel. I bet he had lots of fun while doing this! Very well done Jeff!

New eBay Rules Affect Indies
Filed Under Distributor News, Industry News, Music Retail News | Leave a Comment
Indie retailers will face another massive hurdle this September when eBay introduces a rule that means they will have to double the advertised price of many of the records they sell. Ebay has a new rule which means sellers are expected to absorb the price of domestic postage costs in to the starting price of CDs or records being sold is expected to cause widespread hardship and chaos for hundreds of Indies trying to offload old stock through bulk deals and those that have a sideline in second-hand product. Some are expected to close.
Proper Distribution indie sales manager and retail expert Graham Jones said “Every indie uses eBay, it’s a fantastic way of clearing out old stock, so this isn’t good. If sellers have to add a typical £3.20 postage charge to their upfront price it will make their stock look far less attractive.”

Creativity Vs Functionality
Filed Under Industry News, Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
We all know that in the Packaging Industry, all designs must be USEFUL art. That means creativity should never outdo functionality. In other words, the package should serve its purpose which is well..to enclose and protect the product. You might wonder what triggered this blog post.
It’s this.
This Milk carton is on the list of top 20 Unusual and Creative Packaging Designs. Do not get me wrong, I have high respect and appreciation for each design. Most of them made me go WOAH except for this milk carton which made me go HMMM…
Hmmm..will I get all the milk out from the carton..Hmmm..how will this be transported? Hmmm.how will this fit in my fridge-it’s so frail-looking it might bend and leak…If you got good answers to my hmmms, then Congratulations. Nicely done package. The best of the 20 even!

The idea of using Floppy Diskettes for album packaging is not new. It has been done before by New Order, Porch Nap and some others but I have to say I find the new packaging of Science Vs. Witchcraft the best version so far. They used 5.25″ Floppy diskettes, took out the magnetic disk and replaced it with their CD (Yes they do fit perfectly). They also went two steps further and made a pixilated custom sleeves & label that resembles an old 1980’s PC game. The most unusual add-on happens when you put the CD in your computer. It will pop up with a text-based adventure game that one of the band members wrote himself. It’s definitely worth checking out.

$1 for Coldplay Tickets??!
Filed Under Events, Industry News | Leave a Comment
That’s right. One Dollar! O-N-E effin dollar! Wait, Did I say ONE dollar? Just checkin.
Last-minute tickets to big acts like Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen are as little as $1! At least the bad economy has brought something good to music lovers. According to eBay Inc’s StubHub, the leading Internet ticket re-seller, last-minute concert ticket sales at sharply lower prices are on the rise for acts like Paul McCartney, Springsteen, Jonas Brothers, Coldplay, and U2. But this trend of lower resale ticket pricing is very variable. It’s almost like a stock market and a barometer for pricing city by city.
Pate said fans have already purchased tickets as low as $1 for Springsteen and Coldplay, $9 for Kenny Chesney and $10 for the Jonas Brothers this season, with tickets listing for as low as $16 for upcoming McCartney shows this weekend in Maryland.

Forget About Saving The Planet
Filed Under CD Packaging, DVD Packaging, Industry News | Leave a Comment
Due to the economic meltdown, eco-friendly packaging is off the priority list of many record companies. “Green packaging is way down on my list right now,” says the head of one U.S. independent distributor, adding that there are “bigger problems to worry about.”
“We’re thinking about another kind of green right now,” says Duncan Browne, COO of the Mass.-based Newbury Comics chain when asked why they stopped using eco-friendly packages. “We’re seriously committed to green of the dead president kind.” And he is not alone. Plenty of other independent and small-scale record companies feel the same way. They are all pointing their fingers to the economy. The U.S. album sales continue to fall. According to Nielsen SoundScan, as of the end of April, album sales are down 7 percent from the corresponding year-earlier period.
I am saddened by this fact but I cannot blame them entirely because well…business is business after all. If the sales are not good, then concerns such as saving the planet have to wait. I genuinely understand their side of the coin and I am not trying to convince them to think otherwise. I just hope that a few good men will remain faithful to this cause despite the current challenges of the economy.
