Are you are a new musician trying to make a name in the music industry? Then you probably know that with today’s tough competition and tough economy, getting even the least bit of attention is very challenging and frustrating, not to mention expensive. New indies are swimming in a vast sea of sprouting bands and popular musicians and it requires a lot of determination and smart strategies for new musicians to get noticed.
Because of the economy and the state of the music industry, most agents are more meticulous. They give preference to musicians with previous experience. The best thing for you to do in order to get noticed is to self-publish your music. By being self-made, you are showing these people-agents, record labels, investors- that you are responsible musicians, that you are serious about your career, and that you have basic knowledge and experience of the music business. This gives you a big plus for your second album.
Self-publishing would also protect you from being ripped off by deceitful agents and distribution companies. There are some cunning agents who let artists sign away a very large chunk of their profit. If you self-publish, you would have in-depth knowledge of the ins and outs of music publishing and distribution. This would give you a very big advantage for your next album.
Another big advantage is that you have complete control of everything. Yes, the thought of too much freedom could be scary at first but once you get the idea of how the music business works, excitement will take over. You have complete control of your songs, of what you want to include in your album, of your CD packaging, of your manner of distribution. This gives you more room to express your style and creativity as musicians.
So you would not feel nervous of the whole process, do some basic research before you start. Read up some books and articles about music distribution so you would have an idea of the whole process. It is also wise to ask other self-made bands for basic advice and tips. Since they have first-hand experience, they will have a lot to share to you. Ask them anything and everything from choosing a good manufacturing company to legal matters like copyright. Talking to them would not only take away some of your fears, but you would also get some good contacts.
Self-publishing is not an easy thing to do but it is not that hard either if you really put yourself into it. With lots of determination, charm, and talent, you will definitely achieve what you’ve always wanted. Good Luck!;-)
