Six Holiday Promotion Ideas for Musicians

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Aside from spreading good cheer, Christmas is also the best season to thank your fans, promote your music and sell a merch or two.

It’s the time of year where people are “required” to buy stuff for family and friends. It’s also the time where everyone’s got more money to spend and a lot of time to waste. So take advantage of the holidays by doing full-force music marketing. Here are some clever holiday marketing ideas for bands:

Christmas Music Video.  Don’t cringe. I’m sure when you think of Christmas music videos, you’ll think of Backstreet Boys and Justin Bieber and Britney Spears. Erase those images in your head because you can still be cool with a Christmas video. Your song doesn’t even have to do anything with the holidays as long as it’s theme is Christmas.  Make it fun! Think “What Would OKG Go Do?”

Christmas album.  And why not! Just come up with three original songs and some covers. Make sure you get your CDs done before November to avoid the rush. Since this is a special album, put it in a special CD packaging or you can even release some on Vinyl.

12 Christmas Giveaways. Give gifts to your fans “12 days before Christmas” style. On the first day, give away one Vinyl record. On the second day, give away two t-shirts. On the third day, give away three  concert tickets.

Go Caroling. Visit the houses of some of your fans and perform on their doorstep. They’d love you to bits for the extra effort. But this is tricky, make sure you’re already have hardcore fans (and you’re doing it to make them happy) because if you’re not (just a few people showing up during gigs, only 500 facebook likes) people will think you’re too cheap.

Christmassy website. You don’t have to go all red, yellow and green. If you’re a metal band or you have a definite color scheme, stick to it! But at least have a subtle falling snow effect or a crazy Christmas picture or whatever. The point is, don’t ignore the season.

Christmas Newsletter. Just remind your fans how much you appreciate their support by giving them an e-mail newsletter. Make it short and sweet. Don’t try to promote anything for once. This e-mail should be for them, not for you or for your career. For them. You can even add a video clip of you guys singing for your fans wearing Christmas suits.

What other holiday band promotion can you think of?
