Country music buyer for Best Buy Laura Greenspan, a member of the more traditional sector of retail music, completed the circle when she discovered singer / songwriter Jeffry Steele on television of all places.
“He was so good, but he was the only one I didn’t know much about, so I was curious. I went to his Web site and saw that he’d written so many of these country songs I loved,” she said. “Then I went on Wikipedia to get some background on him, and went to Rhapsody to listen to the music.”
You wouldn’t expect this story to not somehow in involve the internet, would you? Greenspan later approached Steele, and the retail giant Best Buy now carries 3 of his CDs . Who would ever expect a story like this be considered “nostalgic”?

Jimmy Iovine explains exclusivity deal with Best Buy

Interscope-Geffen-A&M chairman Jimmy Iovine talks about his label’s exclusive release with Best Buy for the Guns & Roses album “Chinese Democracy”. Here’s what he had to say:
With the confusion and how much media is spread out and how hard it is to market things to a mass audience right now, I think you’ll see the labels needing marketing partners to drive this music, whether it’s a song, an album or a new configuration. In this case, Best Buy gave this album a great deal of marketing that we couldn’t have gotten any other way. Now we have the press on our side as well, which is extraordinary.
I agree that some might see this type of deal as a pretty big blow to the independets out there. That may be true, but at this stage in the game, the major labels need all the help they can get.
