Most CD album artworks feature the artists’ portraits and some are just soooooo boring. They are merely photos of the artists, without much concept behind the photo. When you’re selling your CD, vinyl record, or merch, you’re not merely selling these items as ordinary goods- you’re selling and promoting yourself. That’s why you should put more thought when conceptualizing your CD packaging and CD artwork.
Here are some ways portraits can be creative:

What a lovely photo. It’s like it’s something ripped out from a magazine, only that the face is covered with text- so unmagazine-like. If the text was placed anywhere else, it would just be one of those boring vanity shots.
A Seat at the Table- Solange
Plain and simple yet the message is quote clear. Just look at Solange’s eyes and those colorful clips and you’ll see her nostalgia for her childhood. Brilliant. See? It doesn’t take a lot of Photoshop work and bling to come up with a good album art.
Tutu- Miles Davis
Not your ordinary portrait. Just look at how chiaroscuro lighting has turned the face into a work of art.
Shine On- The Kooks
And why the heck not? It lets people know more about you and what you’re trying to imbibe. This is particularly useful if you’re still relatively new in the music industry.
Kiss Me Once- Kylie Minogue
You can add a bit of drama by shooting with a wall of glass in the foreground. Another example is getting inside the shower and shooting with steam. Be creative.
