Sales of custom vinyl records increased by 14 percent over the previous year, with around 2.8 million units sold. This is a new record for vinyl sales since 1991, when the format had all but disappeared in the wake of the CD boom, according to a report released yesterday by Nielsen SoundScan.
Unsurprisingly, the artists who sell best in vinyl records are classic rock acts and indie bands. Here are the top selling new albums on vinyl. What I’d like you to notice is their attractive packaging. They all have catchy artwork and I honestly believe it is one of the key components why they are top sellers. People buy vinyl not just for the music-but also for the nostalgia and the visual appeal. Vampire Weekend’s Contra is one of the most unique (and controversial) album artwork for 2010. Black Keys’ Brothers is nominated for the 2010 Grammy Awards for Best Recording Package. So is there a connection between artwork and album sales? For vinyl, I think there is.
