The Brain-40 boxset celebrates the 40th anniversary of German music label Brain Records. The design references that of circuit diagrams not just as a metaphor for all the connections but because these acts were pioneers of the synthesizer and amongst some of the first to apply them to music.
The synthesizer link is then continued into the back design with the typography and also through the name BRAIN-40, something that could easily be the name of a vintage Moog synthesizer.
Colour was dependent on the area of the label they came from. The music of Brain although largely connected in sound could be broken down into four key styles and hence each style was given a colour which was used constantly throughout the box set. The colour of the relevant disc was the only colour accent on the cover of that record sleeve, and was continued into the book pages and also the vinyl record pressing itself.
